Kaitlyn's birth story

I am going to back things up and start a few weeks before Kaitlyn's birth. June 3rd (which also happened to be our anniversary) I went in for my 38 week check up. I chatted with my Dr for a few minutes as he had me lay down on the table. He got ready to measure my belly by placing his hand on my stomach. I noticed his face right away and noted the look of concern. "I don't think this is a butt under your ribs." He exclaimed. He did a quick exam and an ultrasound that confirmed that our baby was in fact breach. Being 2 weeks away from my due date my Dr. was concerned that I could go into labor at any time, and if that happened while baby was breach then they would have no choice but to do a c-section. Seeing as this is my 5th baby and I have had all vaginal, healthy births, he really didn't want to see me have to have a c-section. Being that it is a hospital policy not to deliver breach babies we had only a few options. My Dr. suggested that we do an external version (turning the baby from the outside). I agreed and we set things up for that afternoon.

My mother in law took the rest of the day off of work to be with our kids. Bill and I headed to the hospital that afternoon. I was really nervous because I had heard all kinds or horror stories about having a version. I heard it was extremely painful and that it would likely cause me to go into labor. We prepared ourselves for what could happen. My Dr. explained before the procedure the risks to me and the baby, but assured us that they are very minimal. We trusted my Dr and his opinion. Bill stood on one side of the bed and held my hand as the Dr. worked on the outside of my stomach. Bill said it was really amazing to watch. He got to see the baby turn. It was over in a matter of 30 seconds. Baby girl turned just like that...and it wasn't painful like everyone said, just a little uncomfortable. They kept me at the hospital for about an hour to monitor me and make sure baby wasn't in distress. We went home from the hospital that afternoon praising God that she had turned so easily and that everything was okay. Now we just prayed that she would stay head down until I went into labor.

The next week on June 10th I went in for my 39 week check up. I kind of suspected that my Dr. was going to tell me that baby girl was breach yet again. I had felt her turning inside me a few days earlier. He confirmed what I suspected...she was in fact breach! Dr. W. had said the week before that if I came in at 39 weeks and she was breach he would just do another version and induction that day. However he seemed to have a change of mind. Maybe it was because he was going out of town that weekend, or maybe it was because labor and delivery was full that day, or maybe it was because like my Dr. said he wanted to get me as close to my due date as possible. So we planned a version and induction for the following week. I left with instructions to "Not go into labor over the weekend." I said I'd try my best. I certainly didn't want to have a c-section unless it was the best thing for the baby.

That week felt like an eternity long, but June 16th finally rolled around. Bill and I dropped the kids off at his parents in the morning and then headed to the hospital at 9:00 am. I am going to be totally honest here. I felt a little disappointed. Things weren't turning out exactly as I had planned. I had really wanted to go into labor on my own. Labor at home as much as possible and then go to the hospital. But it was not to be and I had to come to terms with the fact that God had planned this day ahead of me and that He was in control. I was nervous about all the things that could also go wrong on this day. But God continued to remind me that He was in control and would get us through this day.

As I was getting into my gown and preparing for what lay ahead I heard the nurse talking to Bill in the other room. She explained to Bill that if they couldn't get baby to turn they would send us home and schedule a c-section. I whispered under my breath "You have got to be kidding me." It never dawned on me that we could leave the hospital that day with no baby yet.

My Dr walked into the room about a half hour later with much confidence. He told me that baby girl was going to turn and that we would be having our baby that day! Bill and I felt comforted by his confidence. He quickly did the version without any trouble, getting her head into the correct position, and then started pitocin. That was at 10:30 a.m I was actually already having some regular contractions on my own that morning before we got there.

I did opt to have an epidural. Because the pitocin was making my contractions strong and come every 2 minutes (and I was only about 3 cm dilated at that point) I knew that I was going to have a long road ahead. I have since regretted that decision but there is nothing I can do about that now. They came in around maybe 12:30 p.m. to administer the epidural. After prepping me the Dr started around 1:00. What was only supposed to take 10 minutes took a half hour. It was one of the worst pains I have had to go through. They couldn't get the catheter to thread into my back, so he had to do it twice. I was hunched over with Bill holding my shoulders in place (while having contractions) trying to stay still for that half hour. I was very hot and worn out by the time they finally finished. They laid me mostly flat onto the bed so the epidural could take effect. My Dr. walked in a few minutes later. He had planned to come in and break my water. He took a look at me and started to ask if I was feeling better since I got my epidural but then he stopped short and asked what was wrong (I guess I didn't look good). The nurse explained that they had had a hard time getting it in. The next thing I knew I was feeling really sweaty and tired. I saw my Dr. look at me and the nurse (who must have seen something on the monitor) exclaimed that she needed to give me some meds...my blood pressure was bottoming out.

Because my blood pressure dropped so low, this put the baby into distress for a few minutes. My Dr. explained that he wasn't going to break my water yet. They needed to monitor the baby for awhile and make sure she was alright. They immediately put me on oxygen to help the baby. He stood there for several minutes watching until the baby's heart rate stabilized. Once he saw that she was doing alright again he said he would be back in a little while to break my water. Since that moment I have struggled with guilt. If I hadn't gotten an epidural to ease intense contractions, I wouldn't have put my baby in danger. But I can't change the past. I am just thankful that it turned out alright.

After all that it was basically a waiting game. They watched me and the baby very closely to make sure we were both doing good. After a few hours I started to feel like the epidural was wearing off on my right side. I started feeling the contractions again. I told the nurse how I was feeling, so she suggested they turn my to my right side to give the epidural a chance to spread to that side. Of course as soon as they turned me to the right, baby's heart rate started to drop real low. So they had to put me back on my left. Throughout that afternoon the baby continued to have drops in her heart rate. They concluded that the baby must have the cord wrapped around her neck. Bill and I felt nervous about that, but they assured us that she would be okay, and that plenty of babies were born with a cord wrapped around them. I laid there and prayed for God's protection over our little one.

At 3:50 p.m. My Dr. came back to break my water. Usually when my water breaks things really pick up and the baby comes in a short amount of time. Not this time around however. Baby girl's head was still pretty high up and I was still only about 3 cm dilated. I stayed around 3 cm for the next hour or so. I just rested for the next few hours. My nurse predicted that once I got to 5 cm that things would just start to fly...and wouldn't you know she was right! I remember them checking me and telling me I was at a 5...then checking me shortly after that because I was starting to progress really fast. The epidural had pretty much all worn off on my right side, and I began to moan as I felt each contraction coming harder and closer together. They were going to try and give me some other pain meds to see if that would help, but the nurse decided to check me first. I was already at an 8. She whispered to me that we were almost there and that I probably only had about 15 minutes left. She walked out of the room to get something. It wasn't even 2 minutes when I felt it...I KNEW it was time to push. I told Bill I felt ALOT of pressure. He quickly found the nurse call button and paged for our nurse.

Within seconds the nurse and my Dr. were there and everything was in place, and I began to push. I started to push then the contraction ended. I waited a minute then pushed our sweet baby into the Dr.'s hands. The nurse told me to open my eyes as I was pushing. I'm so glad she did because it was the most amazing thing to see our daughter as she exited my womb. I laid back and breathed a huge sigh of relief. She was here, she was safe, she was beautiful! And amazingly there was no cord around her neck, praise God! She was welcomed into our lives at 6:25 p.m.

Bill and I had been going back in forth between 2 names and weren't totally sure what we were going to call her. But after seeing her, Kaitlyn Joy just seemed right!

These are pictures that Bill took just moments after her birth.
We were shocked by the amount of dark hair she had. None of our other babies had that much hair.

Holding Kaitlyn for the first time.
Just like her brothers and sisters before her Kaitlyn's birth was unique and special and a day I will never forget.

We are praising God for this precious gift of life!

Happy birthday baby

Our baby had a birthday on the 21st. It's hard to believe that she is 2!! How can that be possible? I still remember the day she was born so clearly.

Things Claire is doing right now:
She has developed quite the vocabulary and says pretty much everything
She can't pronounce "c" or "k" so replaces all of them with a "t"
She loves to play outside and run
She loves babies
She loves to color
Her favorite food are oranges
She wants do do everything on her own
Showing interest in going potty
Has to have her favorite book (she calls it "Sunshine baby") read to her at naptime and bedtime
She also sleeps with that favorite book
She still sucks her thumb at naptime and bedtime
She still sleeps with her favorite blankie
We can never keep socks and shoes on her
She loves to do anything her older siblings are doing
She thinks she is a big kid too
She is getting a little attitude and will put her hands on her hips
She cries easily especially if someone else is crying
She still loves to snuggle
She can count to 8
She loves to sing

I'm sure there is more but that's what comes to mind right now.

The other day when I dropped her off at her little mini's class her teacher said to me, "we hid her blankie in her cubbie this morning and it seemed to help. She acted less babyish." I wanted to respond, "She acted less babyish? But she is my baby." Instead, I asked her teacher if it would be best if we didn't bring it with her in the mornings. She thought it would be good for Claire to leave it home. Sigh! I'm just not ready for her to grow up...appearently. One more step away from babyhood. I know this is a good thing these are milestones, but in a way it makes me sad. So the blankie stays home and Claire does fine without it. :)

Wow 2 years old!

Claire, you have filled our lives with so much joy. You were an unexpected gift that we will always praise God for. God has given you a tender little heart. We are so excited to see what He has in store for you. I pray that you will come to know and love Jesus as your Savior. I know He will use the gifts He has give you in a mighty way.

Happy birthday sweet girl! We love you!

31

I woke up on Friday to this card (and a lovely birthday sign). What a great way to start the day! Not sure if she is implying that I am getting old...but it's good to know I would be missed. :)

Tea Party

My friend Janel and I decided to do a combined birthday party for our daughters. Anna and Ella's birthday's are a week apart (2 years in age difference). Our theme was a fancy tea party. We had a blast planning all the food, decorations and activities. Janel and I stayed up until about 1:30 am the night before making all the food. Oh the laughter we shared in the process! What great memories I have tucked away from some of our last months here.

The girls were invited to wear their fanciest dress and accessories. Janel and I spent time curling our girls hair, painting nails, and applying (a little bit) make up.

Anna was quite pleased with how her hair and outfit turned out. She said she felt like a
princess. :)

Putting on fancy heal shoes!

Some of the girls wore fancy hats.

We started the party by talking about manors and what it means to be a lady. Here Janel is reading to them from a Fancy Nancy book.

Heading outside to the tea party. We set up a screen tent and decorated the inside. Look at all those beautiful dresses. :)

Petite fours, made by yours truly.

We used my grandma's fancy dishes to serve the girls. Each girl had a flower pot with a flower sucker as a place holder

Some decorations.

The tea pot and tea cup cupcakes that we slaved over into the wee hours of the night. Hey, it wasn't perfect but our girls loved it!

One of the girls trying a crumpet with jam.

Yummy scones made by Janel, and the pb&j finger sandwiches.
Enjoying a cup of tea.

One of the activities we did was to (attempt) play croquet with the girls.

Janel and her daughter Ella and myself and Anna.
I am so glad we decided to do this together. I know this is a party that we will all treasure and remember for a long time.

Dear Annaliese

I've know forever that this day would come. The first of many days that my heart will swell and my breath will pause...in the realization that you have turned into a young lady. There is no stopping it. You continue to grow and change at a rate that I can hardily keep up with. My arms remember the day as if yesterday, that you were placed in them and you made me a mother. Each day since has been like a mystery unfolding in front of me. I stand and watch in wonder as the Lord molds you into who He wants you to be. I get to see glimpses of who you might become, and I have to tell you it excites my heart!

The other day I had a talk with your piano teacher [side note: she is also our pastor's wife]. She told me of a tender moment she experienced with you. Unknowingly to me you were carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. You confided in your teacher of your concerns for a sick uncle, for your baby sister who was having surgery in a few days, and a few other things that had you concerned. Your heart was so burdened that you shed tears. She stopped the lesson to talk and pray with you. After that you felt better and were able to move on with your lesson. I am so thankful for the godly woman in your life! Upon hearing this story I got a glimpse...this was the moment that I realized that you ARE growing up. I got a chance to talk to you later that evening about what happened at piano. You told me everything, and I noted the maturity in your thoughts and voice, the wisdom and discretion that you displayed. When did this happen? Sigh!

Anna you have a beautiful heart. I know that God wants to use you. I see how you care about others. I see your compassion. You are amazing. You are a gift. You are fearfully and wonderfully made. You are beautiful from the inside out.

I know we have our struggles. Some days are just so hard. But then there are days like this when I see...truly see who you are meant to be. I see Christ working in you. I have hope that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion. The road is long. It is full of bumps...full of growing pains...but oh, there are so many joys along the way. I pray for you my sweet girl everyday...that you will draw closer to Him. I also pray for me for wisdom and also that I will allow you to grow and expand your wings as is necessary. I want you to know that I am always here for you. I love you so much.

Happy 8th birthday my lovely lady!

Love,
Mom

Ryan turns 6

The bigger brother turned 6 on the 22nd (yes the boys birthdays are a day apart!)
One of Ryan's creations.
Ryan eating a pine cone. (There is a funny story behind that, he was pretending to be the squirrel on Ice Age) And yes, he has marker on his head. He likes to draw on himself. :)
Oh sweet boy, I can't believe you are 6 already! You are turning into quite the sweetheart. You are a charmer, always telling me that I am beautiful and that you love me. You melt my heart. God has gifted you with a sensitive spirit. You make us all laugh with the funny things you say. You are very creative in everything you do. I can't wait to see what God has planned for you. I pray that you grow into a godly young man and strong leader. I am so happy that I get to be your mommy! You fill my heart with so much joy. I love you more then I can express!

Happy birthday Ryan!

James turns 3

Our busy little man turned 3 on the 21st.
One of the many lego guns that James builds (he is all boy!).
Silly boy!

James, you are a true delight. You certainly give us a run for our money at times (grin), but we could not be more blessed to have you in our family. You are full of such life (you keep me on my toes). You make my heart smile. You make me laugh. It is so fun watching you grow and become who you are meant to be. I know that God has a plan for you. I pray that you will be used by Him in a mighty way!

I love you little man! Happy 3rd Birthday.

Dear Claire

Photobucket
My sweet Claire,

Words cannot express the depths of love I feel for you. You were a gift to us and I feel so humbled to have received. I remember so clearly the day I found out you would be joining our family. We were so surprised, but my heart could not have been more full. I knew that God had a plan and that you were a perfect part of that.

I savored every moment I had with you growing inside of me. Every little kick and movement made me all the more excited to see and hold you. I fell head over heals for you the moment I heard your first cry. Your birth was perfect. It was the most amazing, peaceful experience. We praised the Creator for your sweet life. Your middle name "Eliana" was chosen because it means, "My God has answered", and He had. God is good and I pray that you will come to see that over time.

Every time I look into your beautiful blue eyes I see God's grace...and I can't believe you are mine. I see how God has used you already so much in our family. I see how God used you to deepen my love for your daddy. He used you along with other circumstances to draw me closer to the Savior. You fit right in with your older sister and brothers. You love them so much, and they can't get enough of you. The boys always make you laugh, and you adore your big sis. Whenever they enter the room your face lights up. This makes my heart melt. We are so blessed that God chose you to be in our family.

Already I can see God has given you a sensitive heart. You love to snuggle. You are a mama's girl. That of course makes me happy. But even though you always want me, you LOVE your daddy. You always reach your arms to him and give him pats and hugs. You have captured his heart...wrapped him around your finger. Daddy gets excited to see you when he gets home for lunch, he always checks to make sure you are still up so that he can have one last fill of you before heading out again. Your smile is contagious and you make many hearts happy.

Claire I pray that you remember that you are special, you are loved, you are fearfully and wonderfully made. Most importantly I pray that you come to know the one who knit you together in the secret place, the One who planned your life from the beginning of time, the One who loves you even more then I do. His love is so deep for you, that He sent his Son to die on the cross just for you. I pray you understand that someday, and that you come to love Jesus as much as I do.

I cannot believe that a year has past. It is bittersweet. I already miss that tiny babe you were, but yet I have loved every minute of watching you grow and learn and will continue to be amazed at all God has created you to be. God has a plan for you my sweet girl. I am excited that I get to watch His plan for you unfold.

Happy 1st birthday!

With all my love,
Mommy

30

I am officially a part of the 30's club. :) I had my birthday last Thursday (Jan. 8th). I have to say it was one of the best birthdays I have ever had! (Way better then last year...post on that later.) Despite the fact that Bill was in Atlanta for work most of the week, it really was a great day. I think most of it had to do with my attitude and God's grace. :)

The kids decided to throw me a "surprise" party. I got out balloons and cupcakes and Anna did the rest. I let them each blow out a candle. There wasn't room for 30 candles so we decided that 3 would be a good representative...one for each decade. :) Instead of gifts, Anna and Ryan drew pictures of what they would give me if they could. I love that!
We played birthday games. Anna made her own version of pin the tail on the donkey.
Bill surprised me by having roses sent to the house. Needless to say I was so touched. What a sweet and romantic thing to do.
Aren't they beautiful?!
I ended to evening by driving to the airport to pick up Bill from his trip. That was so fun. A friend came over and stayed with the kids who were sleeping (it was an 11:00 p.m. flight). I waited anxiously for Bill to walk down the long hallway to me. I felt like I had gone back in time to when we were first dating (long distance) and we would fly to see each other. I had butterflies in my stomach. It was so so great to see one another again...what a perfect gift! What a perfect ending to my day.

A few people have asked how I feel being 30. I don't feel any different. :) In fact I think it was about time that I finally entered a new decade. :) I feel very blessed. I mean, I have a God who is on my side, I have 4 beautiful children, a husband who loves me and that I am madly in love with. Things aren't perfect, but I wouldn't want them to be. This has been an incredible journey so far and I know there is an exciting future ahead (more on that later). I look forward to the next 30!
